ARDS Race Licence Pathways & Requirements
How to obtain and progress through an ARDS circuit racing licence.
The ARDS process is the recognised route into competitive circuit racing.
There are two primary entry pathways depending on age, plus an upgrade pathway for current licence holders.
All assessments are conducted under circuit rules and to a strict safety standard.
Two primary entry pathways
Junior pathway
Candidates may commence training from 13½ years of age. The ARDS test may be taken from the age of 14.
Includes briefing, ARDS written paper and on-track assessment.
Successful completion supports Junior licence progression, subject to regulations in force at the time.
Adult (novice) pathway
For eligible candidates applying for their first circuit racing competition licence.
Includes briefing, ARDS written paper and on-track assessment.
Successful completion supports Interclub (Race) licence application, subject to regulations in force at the time.
What the ARDS assessment involves
Classroom briefing
Flags and light signals, circuit procedures, signing-on and scrutineering, safety equipment, race meeting structure and conduct.
ARDS written paper
Formal written assessment covering safety, flags/signals and race procedures.
Practical driving assessment
Instructor demonstration followed by assessed on-track driving.
Assessment includes control, smoothness, balance/weight transfer, awareness and flag recognition while driving.
Strict safety standard
During assessment you must comply fully with circuit regulations and maintain complete control of the vehicle at all times.
Loss of control — including spinning, crossing the white line or rumble strip, or failing to maintain proper track discipline — will result in failure.
Licence upgrade pathway
For current race licence holders seeking development and, where applicable, an upgrade signature.
An instructor signature may be issued subject to meeting the required standard and regulations in force at the time.
